The first thing the academy took from Mattix Raydeon was time.
Not in any grand or dramatic sense. No officer announced that his old life had ended. No bell marked the boundary between the civilian he had been and the cadet he was expected to become.
Time simply disappeared.
It vanished into morning formations, physical conditioning, navigation lectures, weapons drills, engineering laboratories, military law, flight theory, strategy reviews, uniform inspections, tactical simulations, sleep rotations and meals eaten too quickly to remember.
The academy measured the day in centons and microns.
A cadet who arrived three microns late was late.
A cadet who completed an assignment one centon after the deadline had failed to meet the deadline.
A cadet who hesitated during formation slowed the entire unit.
Mattix had spent his life aboard the Zacayrya, where schedules mattered but people understood that machinery failed, lifts stalled and cargo moved according to the temper of ancient loading systems. On Horizon Three, time was treated as a form of discipline. Every moment belonged to the academy before it belonged to the cadet.
By the end of his first secton, Mattix learned to wake before the compartment lights activated.
By the end of his second, he learned to dress in darkness.
By the end of his first month, he could eat breakfast while reading a tactical briefing and polishing the fastening points on his boots beneath the table.
He did not enjoy any of it.
That seemed to disappoint people.
The academy’s recruitment programs often spoke of honor, purpose and belonging. The cadets around Mattix used the same words, especially when instructors could hear them. Yet most of academy life involved exhaustion, embarrassment and the constant correction of faults no civilian would have noticed.
Mattix had expected hardship.
He had not expected pettiness.
His uniform collar was wrong by two millimetrons.
His bunk cover folded incorrectly at one corner.
His answer in military history contained the correct date but omitted the formal title of the officer involved.
He stood too rigidly during inspection.
He did not stand rigidly enough during review.
He spoke too softly.
He sounded argumentative when he spoke clearly.
And always, beneath each correction, there lingered the same unspoken question.
Who admitted him?
Most cadets had heard some version of the story.
A fifth petition.
A divided council.
A mysterious professor.
Conditional status.
No prominent family.
No prior planetary academy.
Born aboard a colonist ship.
Among the academy’s older lineages, a name could function like rank. Solan, Braska, Teryn, Mordane and Vey carried histories of command, battle and political service. Cadets from those families entered Horizon Three with expectations already prepared for them.
Raydeon carried no such weight.
His father supervised fabrication teams.
His mother coordinated habitation resources.
His sister maintained water systems.
His brother managed cargo.
His grandfather had repaired engines.
Mattix’s family had kept ships alive.
The academy preferred families that commanded them.
At first, the resistance remained polite.
Cadets failed to save him a place during meals.
Study groups filled before he arrived.
Conversations stopped when he approached.
Training partners selected one another until an instructor assigned someone to him.
Then the remarks became less careful.
“Transport boy.”
“Deck rat.”
“Council charity.”
“Vale’s experiment.”
The last name followed him most often, though Professor Cassian Vale never appeared.
Mattix expected the professor to contact him after admission.
He did not.
There was no private meeting, no sponsorship review and no explanation of the unusual intervention that had placed Mattix inside the academy. Vale’s name appeared only on Mattix’s official file beneath the words PRINCIPAL ACADEMIC SPONSOR.
The professor might as well have been dead.
Mattix asked administrative staff whether a meeting had been scheduled.
None had.
He sent a formal message.
No reply came.
He submitted a second request at the end of his first quarter.
It was acknowledged by Vale’s office and never answered.
By the third attempt, Mattix stopped asking.
He decided that the professor had either lost interest or was waiting for him to fail.
Neither possibility changed the work in front of him.
So Mattix continued.
He did well in mathematics.
He did better in navigation.
He surprised his engineering instructors by identifying system faults from incomplete diagnostic reports. He performed adequately in physical training, poorly in ceremonial drill and inconsistently in command exercises.
His instructors did not know what to make of him.
During written examinations, Mattix was one of the strongest cadets in his year.
During group exercises, he often appeared distant until something went wrong.
Then he became difficult to ignore.
The first serious incident occurred twelve weeks into his training.
The academy assigned Mattix’s class to a simulated damage-control exercise inside an unused cargo section of Horizon Three. The scenario involved a reactor coolant leak, electrical fires, blocked passages and injured crew.
It was not dangerous.
At least, it was not supposed to be.
The training compartment contained inactive machinery, controlled smoke dispensers and heat panels designed to reproduce emergency conditions. Cadets wore respirators and protective gear. Instructors observed through embedded cameras and could end the exercise at any time.
Mattix’s team consisted of six cadets under the command of Varek Solan, the second-yahren cadet he had met on the shuttle.
Solan had advanced quickly.
He was confident, physically capable and skilled at speaking in the clipped, decisive language instructors rewarded. He had also made little effort to conceal his opinion of Mattix.
Their mission was simple.
Enter through Access Corridor Four.
Locate two simulated casualties.
Shut down the coolant system.
Restore emergency power.
Exit within twelve centons.
Solan assigned Mattix to equipment support.
It was the least important position.
Mattix said nothing.
The exercise began.
Red emergency lamps flashed along the corridor. Artificial smoke rolled across the deck. Heat pressed against their protective suits.
Solan moved efficiently, directing two cadets toward the power relay and two toward the casualty location. Mattix followed with a tool case and portable sensor unit.
For the first four centons, everything proceeded exactly as designed.
Then Mattix noticed a vibration beneath the deck.
It was faint.
Not part of the recorded alarm pattern.
He stopped.
Cadet Mara Seln nearly collided with him.
“Move.”
Mattix lowered the equipment case and placed one glove against the wall.
The vibration came again.
Three pulses.
A pause.
Two more.
Solan turned back.
“Raydeon.”
“There’s something wrong with the ventilation system.”
“The ventilation fault is part of the exercise.”
“No. This is behind the wall.”
Solan glanced at the mission timer.
“Continue.”
Mattix looked toward the smoke above them.
It was moving in the wrong direction.
The scenario fans should have drawn it toward the aft vent. Instead, the smoke curled upward and drifted toward the team.
“Airflow reversed.”
Seln checked her wrist display.
“My monitor says normal.”
“So does mine.”
“Then move.”
Mattix remained where he was.
Something was changing inside the ship.
Not in the simulation.
In the real ventilation grid.
He could not explain how he knew. He saw fragments: smoke movement, deck vibration, a flicker in the emergency lighting. Individually, none justified stopping the exercise.
Together, they formed a warning.
“Solan, we should withdraw.”
The cadet commander’s face tightened behind his respirator.
“We have nine centons remaining.”
“This is not part of the drill.”
“You do not have authority to abort.”
Mattix looked at the sealed hatch behind them.
“We need to open the emergency bypass.”
Solan stepped closer.
“You were assigned equipment support. Perform your assignment.”
A loud metallic strike sounded inside the wall.
The corridor lights went out.
For half a micron, there was darkness.
Then the red lamps returned.
The team froze.
A warning tone sounded through their suit communicators.
This was not the exercise alarm.
“Pressure drop,” Seln said.
The smoke accelerated toward a ventilation intake.
Solan looked at his display.
“Training control, this is Team Seven. We have an unscheduled pressure fluctuation.”
No answer.
The compartment speakers crackled.
A mechanical voice followed.
“Containment fault in ventilation sector twelve. All personnel evacuate adjacent compartments.”
Solan’s command posture disappeared.
Mattix lifted the portable sensor.
The display showed rapidly falling pressure in the corridor ahead.
“Forward hatch may seal,” he said.
“Our exit is behind us,” Solan answered.
“No. Pressure is dropping behind the wall. If the automatic system isolates the sector, both hatches will lock.”
Solan turned toward the entry corridor.
The hatch indicator changed from green to amber.
Mattix grabbed the tool case.
“Emergency bypass. Now.”
They ran.
The entry hatch sealed before they reached it.
Seln struck the release control.
Nothing happened.
“Training control, Team Seven trapped in Compartment Twelve.”
Static answered.
The pressure warning intensified.
The exercise compartment was still safe for the moment, but the ventilation failure was pulling air through an improperly secured maintenance junction. If the system isolated the section fully, the cadets could lose breathable atmosphere.
Solan looked around.
“Manual release.”
“Disabled for training,” another cadet said.
Mattix knelt beside the wall panel.
He had seen the compartment schematics during preparation. Behind the panel ran an old emergency conduit connected to the original cargo-bay pressure controls.
The academy had modernized the section without removing the earlier system.
Mattix opened the tool case.
Solan stared at him.
“What are you doing?”
“Opening the bypass.”
“You don’t know if it’s connected.”
“It is.”
“How?”
Mattix did not answer.
He removed the panel cover.
Inside, bundles of cables and pressure lines filled the narrow space.
The others gathered behind him.
Mattix traced the conduit visually.
The lines crossed, separated and disappeared behind the bulkhead.
He could not see the valve.
Yet he knew where it should be.
Not knew.
Felt.
The same pressure gathered behind his eyes.
He reached deeper into the compartment.
Seln caught his arm.
“That line could be active.”
“It is.”
“You’ll vent the corridor.”
“Not this one.”
Mattix twisted a recessed mechanical control.
Nothing happened.
Solan looked toward the pressure display.
“Thirty seconds to critical.”
Mattix turned the control farther.
The wall shuddered.
A section of the floor opened with a heavy clang, exposing an emergency ladder.
Fresh air surged upward.
The pressure indicator stabilized.
Mattix pulled his arm free.
“Down.”
The cadets descended into the maintenance passage.
Moments later, the main compartment sealed completely.
The team emerged two decks below, where academy personnel and repair crews were already responding to the ventilation failure.
No one was injured.
The investigation determined that a worn actuator had failed during the exercise, reversing airflow and triggering an automatic containment response. The maintenance bypass had not been used in twenty-three yahrens.
Mattix expected the academy to recognize what he had done.
Instead, he was charged with insubordination.
Solan’s report stated that Mattix had challenged command authority, disrupted the exercise and accessed a restricted system without approval.
The report acknowledged that the bypass had saved time.
It also emphasized that Mattix had acted before receiving confirmation of danger.
At the disciplinary hearing, Lieutenant Instructor Hadris sat behind a metal desk and read the report twice.
“You believed the exercise systems were failing.”
“Yes, Lieutenant.”
“Your monitors showed no fault.”
“Yes.”
“Training control had not issued an abort.”
“No.”
“Cadet Solan ordered you to continue.”
“Yes.”
“And you disobeyed him.”
“Yes.”
Hadris folded the report.
“Why?”
“The smoke moved against the programmed airflow.”
“That could have resulted from a dozen minor conditions.”
“The deck vibration matched a ventilation actuator fault.”
“You had no direct diagnostic reading.”
“No.”
“You opened a pressure bypass based on an assumption.”
“It was not an assumption.”
“What was it?”
Mattix hesitated.
He had no useful answer.
“I could see what was happening.”
“With no sensor data.”
“Not clearly.”
Hadris leaned back.
“Cadet Raydeon, do you understand why that answer concerns me?”
“Yes.”
“You have performed well academically. That does not authorize you to ignore the chain of command whenever you experience a feeling.”
“It wasn’t a feeling.”
“What was it?”
Mattix looked down at his hands.
“I don’t know.”
The lieutenant studied him.
Mattix expected dismissal.
Conditional cadets were not given many chances.
Instead, Hadris assigned him six weeks of restricted liberty, additional maintenance duties and a formal conduct mark.
“You were right,” the lieutenant said.
Mattix looked up.
Hadris continued.
“You were also insubordinate. Those facts can exist together.”
“If I had obeyed, we would have been trapped.”
“Yes.”
“Then what should I have done?”
“Communicated more effectively.”
“I told Solan.”
“You contradicted him. You did not persuade him.”
“There wasn’t time.”
“There is rarely enough time. Command is not merely seeing the danger. It is causing others to see it before they become part of it.”
Mattix said nothing.
Hadris dismissed him.
The conduct mark remained in his record for the rest of the yahren.
So did the story.
Among the cadets, the details changed with each retelling.
Mattix had panicked.
Mattix had damaged the ventilation system himself.
Mattix had nearly decompressed the compartment.
Mattix had been lucky.
Few repeated that his decision had provided the team’s escape.
Solan never discussed the incident with him.
But afterward, he stopped calling Mattix “transport boy.”
The fleet moved onward.
During Mattix’s first yahren, it crossed the border of the charted Colonial Federation systems.
The last established communications relay fell behind them.
Messages from the old colonies arrived with increasing delay, carried by long-range transmission stations and courier craft traveling between the expedition and Federation space. News became less immediate. Birth announcements were old before they reached their recipients. Political decisions arrived after their consequences had already begun.
The fleet settled into the rhythms of migration.
Agricultural ships adjusted crop cycles.
Schools coordinated lessons across civilian vessels.
Construction crews assembled replacement hull sections from mined material.
Patrol routes expanded as familiar navigational markers disappeared.
The Battlestar Vermilion remained at the formation’s center, while destroyers and scout vessels moved far ahead and along the flanks. Horizon Three trained officers, pilots and specialists for a future colony none of its cadets would see for years.
There were problems, but none became disasters.
A solar storm forced the fleet to alter course for nine days.
Two civilian transports suffered engine failures and were taken under tow.
An epidemic aboard an agricultural vessel was contained before it spread.
A mining ship vanished from formation for seventeen centons after a navigation computer malfunction, then returned under escort.
Each incident became an academy lesson.
Cadets studied the command decisions, logistical effects and communication failures. Mattix often understood the events before the instructors finished explaining them.
He did not think of this as unusual.
He assumed he was simply paying attention.
The second event occurred near the end of his first yahren.
Mattix’s class entered the academy’s Strategic Command Evaluation, a three-day exercise in which teams managed a simulated fleet under worsening conditions.
The evaluation mattered.
Cadets who performed well gained access to advanced command courses. Those who failed were often redirected into technical, administrative or support specializations.
Mattix wanted command.
He had never stopped wanting it.
The cadets were divided into groups of eight.
By academy ranking, Mattix should have been assigned as operations coordinator. Instead, the team selected Cadet Leron Vey, son of a decorated cruiser commander.
Mattix was given logistics.
Again.
The simulation began with twenty civilian ships, four escorts and limited fuel reserves. The fictional fleet was ordered to cross an unstable sector while avoiding hostile patrols.
For the first day, Vey performed well.
He issued clear orders, maintained discipline and followed academy doctrine precisely.
Mattix tracked fuel, supplies, repair capacity and civilian endurance.
By the second day, small problems accumulated.
One transport fell behind.
An escort consumed more fuel than expected.
A communications relay malfunctioned.
Refugee numbers increased aboard two ships.
Vey treated each problem separately.
Mattix saw them converging.
The slow transport forced the formation to compress. The escort’s fuel shortage reduced patrol range. The communications fault delayed warnings from the rear. The overloaded refugee ships required more life-support power, which reduced engine efficiency.
The fleet was not facing four problems.
It was becoming one problem.
Mattix presented the analysis.
Vey listened, then dismissed it.
“The hostile patrols are the primary threat.”
“They won’t need to attack us.”
Vey frowned.
“Explain.”
“Our formation will begin breaking apart in six centons.”
“The navigation model shows acceptable cohesion.”
“Because it treats every ship as capable of maintaining assigned output.”
“They are.”
“Not after the next course change.”
Vey checked the data.
“The course change is required to avoid detection.”
“It will force the slower ships to increase thrust.”
“They have reserve capacity.”
“Not with their life-support demand.”
Vey’s expression hardened.
“Your assignment is logistics, Raydeon.”
“This is logistics.”
“This is command planning.”
“They’re the same problem now.”
Several cadets looked away.
Vey leaned across the table.
“You have a habit of inventing emergencies to make yourself relevant.”
Mattix felt heat rise into his face.
“Run the model without automatic engine compensation.”
“We are not changing simulation parameters.”
“The compensation is hiding the failure.”
“The program is academy-certified.”
“The program assumes stable civilian crews.”
Vey turned to the others.
“We proceed with the course change.”
Mattix looked around the table.
No one supported him.
The maneuver began.
For three centons, the fleet held together.
Then the slow transport exceeded safe engine output.
A simulated drive failure followed.
Two ships altered course to avoid collision.
The rear escort lost communication.
A hostile patrol detected the engine flare.
Within eight centons, the fictional fleet had divided into three groups.
By the end of the day, six civilian ships had been destroyed.
The simulation instructors halted the exercise.
Vey’s team received a failing score.
The post-exercise review was brutal.
Every decision appeared on the central display.
The instructor identified missed opportunities, procedural errors and command failures.
Then Mattix’s warning appeared.
The room went quiet.
The record showed that Mattix had predicted formation collapse within six centons.
It had occurred in five.
The instructor turned toward Vey.
“Why was this analysis ignored?”
Vey sat rigidly.
“It was unsupported by the standard navigation model.”
“Cadet Raydeon requested a modified projection.”
“Yes.”
“Why was it refused?”
“Because he exceeded his assigned role.”
The instructor looked toward Mattix.
“Did you believe the fleet was in immediate danger?”
“Yes, Captain.”
“Why did you not request formal review?”
“I tried.”
“You argued with the team commander.”
“Yes.”
“That is not the same thing.”
The words echoed Lieutenant Hadris’s earlier warning.
Seeing the danger was not enough.
Mattix had known Vey would reject a direct challenge. He had challenged him anyway.
The instructor addressed the team.
“Command failure is rarely the work of one person. Cadet Vey ignored a valid warning. The rest of you recognized tension and chose silence. Cadet Raydeon possessed critical information but failed to present it in a form the commander could accept.”
Mattix looked at the destroyed ships on the display.
“They were simulations,” the instructor said, noticing his expression. “But the habits were real.”
The team was ordered to repeat the evaluation.
Vey blamed Mattix.
This time, the hostility was not subtle.
Mattix found his locker emptied onto the floor.
His study terminal was erased twice.
A message appeared across his bunk wall.
YOU SEE DISASTER BECAUSE YOU ARE ONE.
No one admitted responsibility.
Mattix reported nothing.
He restored his files from memory backups, cleaned the wall and continued training.
During the repeat evaluation, Vey refused to speak to him except through formal channels.
Mattix adapted.
He stopped offering broad warnings.
Instead, he divided his analysis into small questions.
What happens to Escort Two’s patrol radius if Transport Eight requires assistance?
How much reserve power remains after the refugee ships increase life support?
Which vessel becomes the formation anchor after the course correction?
Vey answered because the questions sounded like logistics.
By the time the team recognized the full danger, they had reached the conclusion themselves.
They altered course.
The fleet remained intact.
The team passed.
Vey received credit for the successful command.
Mattix received one of the highest logistics marks in the class.
Neither spoke about what had happened.
That night, Mattix sat alone in the academy observation gallery, looking out at the migrating fleet.
He had succeeded.
It felt very much like losing.
The academy had taught him how to make people listen without knowing they were listening.
He understood why the skill mattered.
He disliked needing it.
His first yahren ended without ceremony.
There was an official review, a new uniform marking and a brief message from his family.
His mother told him everyone aboard the Zacayrya was proud.
His father reminded him that the propulsion position remained available if he changed his mind.
Selra asked whether academy food had finally killed anyone.
Corin said little, but enclosed a photograph of their grandfather standing beneath a maintenance sign that read FIFTH ATTEMPTS WELCOME.
Joren’s own message contained only one sentence.
You are still there, so they have not defeated you.
Mattix read it three times.
He did not receive a message from Professor Vale.
The second yahren began harder than the first.
The academy expected returning cadets to know the rules and punished mistakes more severely. Courses became specialized. Simulations grew less predictable. Physical training shifted from endurance toward combat readiness and survival.
Mattix entered advanced navigation, fleet logistics, combat systems theory and command psychology.
He remained near the top of his class academically.
His command evaluations improved slowly.
He learned to speak earlier in discussions.
He learned that confidence often depended more on timing than volume.
He learned that officers disliked being surprised in front of subordinates.
He learned to offer alternatives before criticism.
Most importantly, he learned to watch people the way he watched ships.
A pause before an answer.
A glance toward another cadet.
A hand resting too long on a control panel.
A commander repeating an order because he doubted it himself.
Human formations, he discovered, also developed stress points.
He did not think of this as part of the ability Professor Vale had seen.
Mattix did not think about that ability at all.
He had begun to assume the professor’s intervention had been a temporary curiosity.
If Vale still observed him, he did so invisibly.
Mattix refused to build his life around a man who would not appear in it.
The third event began in Flight Theory Hall Two.
Mattix entered ten microns before the lecture and found someone sleeping in his seat.
The cadet had stretched his boots across the adjoining chair and pulled his uniform jacket over his face.
Mattix recognized him immediately.
Everyone did.
Jace Arden was the academy’s most promising flight candidate.
He had grown up aboard the patrol carrier Aquila Reach, the son of two Viper pilots. His mother had commanded a squadron during the Perseus Border Conflict. His father was a flight instructor aboard the Vermilion.
Jace had flown training craft before entering the academy.
He was fast, fearless and naturally gifted.
He was also popular in the way certain people became popular without appearing to try. He remembered names, told stories well and possessed the irritating confidence of someone accustomed to succeeding in public.
Mattix looked at the occupied chair.
“Move.”
The jacket shifted.
“Find another seat.”
“That is mine.”
“It was empty.”
“It has my data slate.”
A hand emerged from beneath the jacket, picked up Mattix’s slate and placed it on the floor.
“Now it’s empty.”
Mattix considered striking him with the slate.
Instead, he sat in the adjacent chair.
Jace moved one boot.
“You’re Raydeon.”
“Yes.”
“The one who predicted the fleet collapse.”
“Simulated fleet.”
“Vey still hates you.”
“So I’ve heard.”
Jace removed the jacket from his face.
He had light brown skin, dark curling hair and the relaxed expression of someone who expected the world to be entertaining.
“You don’t seem impressive.”
Mattix opened his course notes.
“That has protected me from many conversations.”
Jace laughed.
The instructor entered.
Flight Theory was one of Mattix’s strongest courses.
It was one of Jace Arden’s worst.
This made no sense to anyone.
In simulators, Jace flew by instinct. He anticipated motion before instruments confirmed it. He could recover from spins, engine failures and sensor loss with astonishing control. During live training, instructors described him as exceptional.
In the classroom, he struggled.
Orbital mechanics frustrated him.
Fuel calculations bored him.
Electronic warfare theory seemed personally offensive.
He passed through a combination of memory, confidence and assistance from friends.
By the middle of the term, those methods stopped working.
The academy required all flight candidates to pass Advanced Tactical Navigation before live Viper certification.
Jace failed the first examination.
He failed the second by three points.
The third failure would remove him from the accelerated pilot track.
The news spread quickly.
Some cadets enjoyed it.
Others volunteered to help.
Jace accepted assistance from everyone and learned from no one.
Mattix became involved accidentally.
After a lecture, he found Jace staring at a tactical projection in an empty classroom.
The display showed two Vipers approaching a gravity well while pursued by hostile craft.
Jace replayed the scenario.
Each time, his lead Viper lost maneuvering power near the edge of the gravity field.
Mattix gathered his notes.
“You’re entering too shallow.”
Jace did not turn.
“The recommended approach is six degrees.”
“For a standard engine load.”
“That’s what the problem gives.”
“No. It gives fuel mass at launch.”
Jace looked at him.
Mattix pointed toward the display.
“You used afterburners during the pursuit. Your mass is lower.”
“Lower mass improves acceleration.”
“It also changes the correction needed for the gravity turn.”
Jace replayed the simulation.
He adjusted the angle by less than one degree.
The Viper entered the gravity field, curved around it, and emerged behind the pursuing craft.
Jace watched the result.
“That is not in the lecture.”
“It is in the fuel section.”
“The fuel section is forty pages.”
“Yes.”
“You read it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“It was assigned.”
Jace looked genuinely disturbed.
He reset the simulation.
“Explain it again.”
Mattix did.
The next day, Jace found him in the library.
He carried three course manuals and the expression of a man approaching medical treatment.
“I need help.”
Mattix looked up.
“With what?”
“All of it.”
“No.”
Jace sat across from him.
“I will owe you.”
“I don’t need anything.”
“Everyone needs something.”
“I need to study.”
“Excellent. So do I.”
Mattix returned to his notes.
Jace waited.
After several moments, he opened a manual.
The pages were upside down.
Mattix ignored him.
Jace turned the book around.
“You know they’re going to remove me from flight training.”
“That would be unfortunate.”
“My entire life has been flight training.”
“Then perhaps you should have studied flight theory.”
“I studied flying.”
“The academy apparently distinguishes between the two.”
Jace leaned forward.
“You could explain this in a way I understand.”
Mattix looked at him.
“How do you understand it?”
Jace thought.
“Movement.”
That answer interested Mattix.
Not numbers.
Not formulas.
Movement.
Mattix closed his own book.
“Show me how you approach a target.”
Jace activated the table projector.
A Viper and a hostile fighter appeared.
He demonstrated a standard intercept, then modified it based on the enemy’s likely reaction.
Mattix watched.
Jace did not calculate every vector consciously.
He imagined the engagement as a shifting shape.
That was familiar.
Mattix changed the display.
He removed the numerical labels.
Then he showed fuel consumption as the shrinking length of the Viper’s projected path.
Jace understood immediately.
Mattix represented gravity as curvature in the available movement field.
Electronic interference became gaps in visible space.
Engine efficiency became the amount of future maneuver remaining after each decision.
They studied for two centons.
Jace learned more than he had in the previous month.
When they finished, he stared at the projection.
“Why don’t they teach it this way?”
“Because most pilots understand the equations.”
“I understand the equations.”
“No, you memorize them.”
“That is a form of understanding.”
“It is a form of surviving examinations.”
Jace smiled.
“Then help me survive one.”
Their study sessions continued.
At first, Jace came only before tests.
Then he began arriving regularly.
He brought food.
He talked while Mattix worked.
He knew cadets from every training division and seemed unable to cross a corridor without someone greeting him.
Mattix found this exhausting.
Jace found Mattix’s isolation unacceptable.
“You cannot spend every rest period in the library.”
“I can. I have tested the theory.”
“You need friends.”
“I have a family.”
“They are on another ship.”
“Yes.”
“That means you need nearby friends.”
“Why?”
“In case you are attacked by a chair.”
Mattix looked at him.
“It could happen. Academy furniture is poorly regulated.”
Despite himself, Mattix laughed.
It was the beginning.
Their friendship made no sense to anyone else.
Jace was invited everywhere.
Mattix declined most invitations.
Jace loved flying.
Mattix had never touched a Viper control.
Jace acted before thinking.
Mattix often thought until action became unavoidable.
Yet they understood each other’s minds in unexpected ways.
Jace saw movement intuitively in the cockpit.
Mattix saw relationships across the larger field.
When they studied together, Mattix learned almost as much as Jace did.
By explaining tactical navigation through motion, he began to recognize the way his own mind worked.
Not as a list of facts.
As connections.
A ship was not a single object.
It was mass, velocity, fuel, crew, damage, intention and possible movement.
A fleet was not a collection of ships.
It was a living pattern.
The pattern changed before any individual part showed obvious danger.
Mattix began noticing those changes more often.
During academy simulations, he predicted equipment failures from crew behavior.
In navigation exercises, he recognized unstable formations before the computer marked them.
During tactical reviews, he knew which commander would break formation based on minor changes in communications.
He assumed this came from experience.
He did not recognize that the ability was strengthening.
Jace noticed only that Mattix was unusually difficult to surprise.
“You always know where the attack is coming from,” he said after one simulator session.
“I read the scenario.”
“The scenario did not show the third fighter.”
“The first two left space for it.”
“That is not normal.”
“It should be.”
Jace considered that.
“No. I fly with people. It is definitely not normal.”
Mattix dismissed the remark.
Jace passed Advanced Tactical Navigation with the fourth-highest score in the class.
He celebrated as though he had won a war.
He dragged Mattix to a crowded cadet gathering near the lower observation deck, announced to everyone that Raydeon had saved his career and forced a drink into his hand.
Mattix hated nearly every moment.
But when Jace raised his cup and said, “To the only man aboard who can make fuel mathematics look like a knife fight,” Mattix found himself smiling.
The friendship changed his place within the academy.
Not completely.
Some cadets continued to distrust him.
Others tolerated him because Jace did.
A few approached him for help with coursework.
Mattix resisted at first, then discovered teaching sharpened his own understanding.
He became known for explanations that ignored the approved methods but somehow made difficult concepts clear.
His marks improved further.
So did his command scores.
Not because he had become more commanding.
Because he had begun to understand how others saw the same field.
Near the end of the second yahren, the fleet crossed the Tantalus Expanse.
The region contained vast clouds of dust and ionized gas that interfered with long-range sensors. Ships tightened formation. Patrols flew closer to the civilian lanes. The Vermilion launched additional Viper squadrons, and academy flight operations were reduced to preserve clear traffic routes.
For twelve days, the stars disappeared behind copper-colored clouds.
The fleet traveled through dimness.
Lights from nearby ships glowed through the dust like lanterns in fog.
Mattix and Jace stood in the observation gallery during second watch.
Jace had completed his first live Viper qualification that morning.
He had not stopped talking about it.
“The simulator does not prepare you for the engine vibration.”
“It is designed to.”
“It fails.”
“You passed.”
“I passed because I am gifted.”
“You passed because your instructor prevented you from exceeding the training boundary.”
“That was guidance.”
“It was a direct order.”
“Guidance can be forceful.”
Mattix watched the ships beyond the glass.
Something about the formation bothered him.
The fleet was compressed for the sensor conditions, but one section near the outer supply line appeared too open.
He followed the movement.
A refinery ship adjusted slightly inward.
A patrol unit shifted to compensate.
Two cargo vessels increased speed.
The opening disappeared.
Mattix relaxed.
Jace noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You do that.”
“Do what?”
“Stop speaking and stare at the fleet like it insulted you.”
Mattix looked at him.
“The formation was uneven.”
Jace examined the distant lights.
“I don’t see it.”
“It corrected.”
“How did you know?”
Mattix shrugged.
Jace leaned against the window frame.
“You should fly.”
“No.”
“You haven’t tried.”
“I have no interest in becoming a pilot.”
“Everyone has interest in becoming a pilot.”
“That is something pilots tell each other.”
“You understand movement better than half my instructors.”
“I understand fleet movement.”
“A Viper is part of a fleet.”
“A very small, unstable part.”
Jace smiled.
“First training slot next term. I’ll arrange it.”
“You cannot arrange academy flight schedules.”
“My father can.”
“No.”
“My mother can.”
“No.”
“I know someone in scheduling.”
“You know everyone.”
“That is why friendship with me is useful.”
Mattix looked back toward the fleet.
Beyond the dust, the Battlestar Vermilion was visible only as a dark shape surrounded by running lights. Viper patrols moved around it in precise arcs.
Ten years to the new world had become eight.
The fleet had traveled farther from the old colonies than any civilian migration in Federation history.
There had been no war.
No great catastrophe.
No hidden enemy waiting beyond the charted systems.
Only distance, work and the slow wearing pressure of the journey.
Some people found that reassuring.
Mattix did not.
The absence of danger did not mean danger was absent.
It meant they had not recognized it yet.
He watched the pattern of ships moving through the dust.
For a moment, the entire formation seemed to unfold inside his mind.
Not as separate lights.
As one vast shape.
He felt the pull of every course adjustment, the pressure on the escorts, the vulnerable spaces between civilian ships and the invisible paths along which a threat might approach.
Then the sensation vanished.
Mattix blinked.
Jace was speaking.
“Did you hear me?”
“No.”
“I said you look terrible.”
“I’m tired.”
“You went somewhere.”
“I’m standing beside you.”
“You know what I mean.”
Mattix did.
He chose not to answer.
The academy cruiser changed course slightly, following the Vermilion deeper into the expanse.
The stars remained hidden.
Mattix placed one hand against the glass.
For two yahrens, the academy had attempted to teach him how to command what could be measured.
He was beginning to sense the shape of things before they could be measured at all.
He did not understand it.
He did not know Professor Vale had been waiting for exactly that.
And somewhere aboard Horizon Three, in an office Mattix had never entered, his sponsor continued to remain silent.
