Vermilion’s Shadow is set within the universe of the 1978 Battlestar Galactica film and television series. It is a standalone story that does not feature characters from the original series.

The Colonial fleet led by Rear Admiral 'William Adama' successfully discovered several new worlds during its journey, but none of them proved to be Earth. Hundreds of yahren have passed since those legendary adventures, and the events of the original series are now taught as history in Colonial classrooms.

This story follows Mattix Raydeon as he travels through a universe filled with long-buried secrets—truths that, once revealed, could shake the very foundations of humanity.

From the forward observation galleries of the Zacayrya, the Colonial Fleet looked less like a gathering of ships than a second night sky.

Thousands of running lights burned against the black, scattered in slow-moving constellations across the void. Passenger liners, ore haulers, agricultural cylinders, hospital ships, refinery barges, patrol cutters, supply carriers and aging colonial transports moved together in carefully measured formations. Some were sleek products of the Federation’s newest shipyards. Others had been repaired so often that their original hull plates existed only in old registry photographs.

At the center of it all, distant but unmistakable, sailed the Battlestar Vermilion.

Even from several hundred kilometrons away, the warship dominated the fleet.

Its broad armored hull caught the pale light of the star behind them. Long flight structures extended from its central body, while clustered engines glowed like contained suns at its stern. Smaller escorts moved around it in disciplined patterns. Vipers flashed near the battlestar’s launch corridors, appearing as brief sparks before vanishing into patrol formations.

The Vermilion was more than a battleship.

It was the shield of the expedition.

It was the Federation’s promise that this migration would not become another story of lost colonies and silent ships.

Ten years remained before the fleet reached the new world.

Ten years before they crossed the final reaches of unclaimed space and established the first permanent Colonial Federation settlement beyond the old systems.

The destination had been named Elysion by the exploration council, though most of the civilian fleet called it New Caprica, Green Haven, or simply Home, depending on how hopeful they felt that day.

Mattix Raydeon called it distant.

He stood alone at the gallery window, one hand resting against the cool transparency panel as the fleet drifted before him. The glass reflected a thin young man of fifteen yahrens, with dark hair that never stayed properly combed, narrow shoulders, and a face that seemed younger whenever he was tired.

He looked nothing like the academy recruitment images.

Those showed square-jawed cadets with perfect posture, broad chests, noble family names, and the calm confidence of people who had never been told they did not belong.

Mattix had been told many times.

He carried a data packet under his arm.

The packet contained his fifth application to the Horizon Military Academy.

In four centars, a transfer shuttle would leave the Zacayrya for Horizon Three, the academy fleet cruiser assigned to the expeditionary force. The council’s decision would determine whether Mattix boarded that shuttle as a cadet candidate or returned to his maintenance shift in the lower engineering decks.

This is where Mattix lives and work for the colonial fleet.

He watched a Viper patrol cross the observation window.

Three fighters flew in triangular formation, their engines bright against the darkness. They were too far away for him to see their markings, but he imagined the pilots sitting inside their narrow cockpits, surrounded by instruments, trained to read motion, distance and threat in fractions of a micron.

Mattix did not dream of glory.

He had never imagined himself standing before crowds or returning from battle while citizens cheered his name.

What he wanted was harder to explain.

Whenever he watched the fleet move, he saw order beneath the apparent confusion. He noticed escort vectors, patrol gaps, transfer lanes and the subtle changes in engine intensity that marked course adjustments. He could look at hundreds of ships and somehow feel where the formation was strained.

It had always been that way.

He could not explain it to the academy examiners.

They asked questions about command, discipline, Federation history, weapons systems and tactical doctrine.

Mattix answered them.

They asked him to calculate orbital transfers, identify engine faults, interpret combat simulations and respond to emergency scenarios.

He completed them.

He had passed every required test four times.

And four times, the academy council had denied him.

The official reasons had changed.

Insufficient command presence.

Limited leadership exposure.

Questionable psychological suitability for high-pressure authority.

Lack of cultural preparation.

The fourth rejection had been the most carefully worded.

Candidate demonstrates measurable technical competency but does not exhibit the instinctive profile associated with successful fleet command personnel.

Mattix had read that sentence until the words lost meaning.

“You planning to stare a hole through the window?”

His grandfather’s voice came from behind him.

Mattix turned to him.

Joren Raydeon walked with the slight stiffness of a man who had spent more than half his life inside industrial ships. He was broad through the chest despite his age, with silver hair cut close to the scalp and heavy hands marked by old burns. A faded engineering patch remained sewn onto the shoulder of his work coat, though he had retired six yahrens earlier.

Joren stopped beside him and looked toward the fleet.

“You brought it?” he asked.

Mattix raised the packet.

“Every report. Every score. Every recommendation.” Mattix states calmly

“Recommendations?” Joren Glances over to him

“Chief Lom says I’m the best systems apprentice he’s had in twelve yahrens.”

“He says that because you are.”

“He also says I’ll probably be rejected again.” Mattix comments watching a repair drone zip by.

Joren grunted. “Chief Lom also thinks anything above Deck Twenty is controlled by sorcery.”

“He may be right.”

“He usually isn’t.”

Mattix looked back at the Vermilion.

“What if they reject me again?”

“They may.” Joren replies coldly

“That is not helpful.”

“You did not ask me to be helpful. You asked me what might happen.”

Mattix lowered his voice.

“Mother says I should stop trying for this.”

“Your mother worries.”

“Father says there’s nothing wrong with engineering work.”

“There isn’t.”

“Selra says academy officers are all self-important.”

“Your sister says that about anyone wearing polished boots.”

“Corin thinks I’m embarrassing myself.”

“Your brother has spent three yahrens attempting to grow a beard. He should be careful when discussing embarrassment.”

Mattix tried not to smile.

Joren folded his arms and turns to Mattix.

“Your family does not doubt your ability because they think poorly of you. They doubt because they understand the fleet. The academy does not admit people merely because they pass examinations.”

“That is the problem.” Mattix showing a slight annoyance in his tone.

“No. That is the system, whether we like it or not.”

Mattix studied his grandfather’s reflection in the glass.

“You still believe they’ll take me.”

“I believe you should make them refuse you as many times as necessary.”

“That could be forever.”

“Then you’ll become the most persistent rejected candidate in Colonial history.”

“They’ll put my portrait in the administrative hall.”

“They’ll use it to frighten clerks.”

A fleet tender passed below them, its running lights blinking in sequence.

Joren’s expression became serious.

“You know what they see when they review your file?”

Mattix gave him a tired look. “A maintenance worker from a mid-level colonist ship.”

“They see someone without academy ancestry, political sponsorship or a family name that opens doors. They see someone who learned navigation from cargo routes and tactical movement from watching patrol screens through a maintenance access panel.”

“I never watched through an access panel.”

“You did when you were twelve.”

“I was repairing a relay.”

“You repaired the same relay for three sectons.”

“It was complicated.”

“It was disconnected.”

Mattix looked away.

Joren continued.

“They know how to measure what they expect. You are going to keep coming back to force them to measure something else.”

“What?”

“That is their greatest difficulty, thinking outside that tiny box they recruit from.”

The gallery announcement system chimed.

“Attention. Shuttle transfer group seven will begin boarding from Port Reception Two in thirty microns. Passengers traveling to Horizon Three, Medical Ark Solace, or Fleet Logistics Command should proceed to identification processing.”

Mattix tightened his grip on the packet.

Joren nodded toward the exit.

“It is Time.”

They left the gallery together.

The Zacayrya had been built as a long-range colonial transport seventy-eight yahrens before Mattix’s birth. It was neither elegant nor fast, but it had survived two reactor replacements, a cargo-bay fire, three civil emergencies and the evacuation of the moon settlement at Orantis.

Nearly twelve thousand people lived aboard it.

The upper levels contained gardens, classrooms, communal halls and residential sectors. The middle decks held workshops, storage compartments and administrative offices. The lower decks housed engineering systems, waste processors, power conduits and the people who kept everything functioning.

Mattix had been born on Deck Thirty-One.

He knew the sound of the Zacayrya’s engines better than he knew silence.

As he and Joren moved through the reception corridors, passengers stepped aside for uniformed personnel from other ships. Officers wore dark fleet jackets with polished insignia. Academy cadets wore gray training uniforms with red shoulder bands.

Mattix wore the best civilian coat he owned.

His mother had pressed it twice.

At Port Reception Two, the rest of the family waited near the security barrier.

Lysa Raydeon stood with both hands clasped in front of her, as though she might prevent herself from reaching out and holding Mattix in place. She had the same dark eyes as her son and the same habit of noticing every small defect in a room. Beside her, Derran Raydeon wore his engineering supervisor’s uniform, still marked with dust from the fabrication decks.

Selra leaned against the wall, arms folded. She was twenty-three, sharp-featured and openly suspicious of most institutions. Corin stood near their father, taller than Mattix and heavier through the shoulders, dressed in the blue coveralls of cargo operations.

The entire family had come.

Mattix wished they had not.

His mother stepped forward first.

“You have your medical record?”

“Yes.”

“Identity seal?”

“Yes.”

“Test transcripts?”

“Yes.”

“Your spare—”

“He has everything,” Selra said. “He has enough documentation to establish an independent colony.”

Lysa ignored her.

“Your spare uniform?”

“I’m not admitted yet.”

“You should still be prepared.”

Derran held out his hand.

Mattix took it.

His father’s grip was firm.

“You’ve done more than anyone expected,” Derran said. “Whatever they decide, you’ve proven yourself.”

It was meant as encouragement.

Mattix heard surrender in it.

“Thank you.”

Derran searched his son’s face.

“There is a position opening in propulsion analysis next cycle. Chief Lom told me he’d hold it.”

“I know.”

“It’s respectable work.”

“I know.”

“You could build a life there.”

“I know.”

His father released his hand.

Corin shifted his weight.

“You want honesty?”

“No,” Mattix said.

Corin continued anyway.

“The council rejected you four times. Maybe they see something the rest of us don’t.”

Selra turned toward him. “That is a remarkable argument from someone who once drove a loading tractor into a pressure door.”

“The warning light was defective.”

“The door was enormous.”

Corin glared at her.

Mattix looked at his brother.

“They may see something,” he said. “That doesn’t mean they’re right.”

Corin’s expression softened slightly.

“You always were stubborn.”

“I learned from you.”

“No, you learned strange things from Grandfather.”

“That too.” Mattix glanced over Joren who was trying not to smile.

The boarding signal sounded.

Lysa embraced Mattix so quickly that his data packet pressed awkwardly between them.

“You do not have to prove anything to us,” she whispered.

Mattix closed his eyes.

He loved her.

That made the words hurt more.

“I know.”

She released him, though reluctantly.

Selra stepped forward and adjusted the collar of his coat.

“Try not to let them make you apologize for being there.”

“I won’t.”

“If they reject you again, I’ll help you corrupt their personnel files.”

“You work in water reclamation.”

“Exactly. No one suspects us.”

Corin gave Mattix a short nod.

Derran placed one hand on his shoulder.

Joren remained a few steps behind the others.

Mattix looked at him.

His grandfather said only, “Make them answer the right question.”

Mattix did not know what that meant.

Before he could ask, the boarding officer called his name.

He turned and crossed the security barrier.

The shuttle to Horizon Three carried forty-two passengers.

Most wore uniforms.

Mattix sat near the rear, beside a viewport no larger than his hand. Through it, the Zacayrya slowly receded.

From outside, his home ship looked enormous: a long, layered structure built around a central spine, its hull crowded with habitation modules and storage compartments. Agricultural lamps shone behind armored transparencies. Cargo craft moved around its docking bays like insects around a sleeping animal.

Beyond it stretched the fleet.

Mattix tried to identify ships as the shuttle changed course.

The hospital ark Solace moved above them, white-hulled and illuminated along its docking arms. Two fleet destroyers held station farther out. A squadron of patrol craft crossed the shuttle’s path and banked away.

Then Horizon Three appeared.

The academy cruiser had once been a fleet command ship. Its hull was narrower than a battlestar’s but far larger than any civilian vessel. Two training bays ran along its sides. A central tower rose from the upper hull, crowded with sensor arrays and communications masts. The academy insignia—a seven-pointed colonial star within a circular border—was painted behind the forward docking section.

Academy Fleet Crusier 

Mattix had studied every public diagram of the ship.

Seeing it through the shuttle window made his stomach tighten.

A cadet sitting across the aisle noticed him staring.

“First time aboard?”

Mattix nodded.

The cadet wore second-yahren markings and a name strip reading VAREK SOLAN. His posture remained straight even while seated.

“You applying?”

“Final review.”

Solan glanced at the civilian coat, the packet, and the faded identification band around Mattix’s wrist.

“Family sponsorship?”

“No.”

“Fleet service?”

“No.”

“Colony defense?”

“No.”

Solan’s expression became politely distant.

“Technical placement, then.”

“Command program.”

The cadet looked at him again.

This time, the assessment lasted longer.

“Fifth petition,” Mattix added.

Solan’s eyebrows rose.

“They allow that?”

“Apparently.”

A young woman in the next row turned around.

She had short blond hair and wore a new cadet uniform without yahren markings.

“Five applications?”

“Petitions,” Mattix said. “I passed the entrance tests on my first application.”

“Then why weren’t you admitted?”

“That is what I hope to learn.”

Solan gave the woman a faint smile.

“The academy evaluates more than examination scores.”

“I know,” Mattix said.

The cadet leaned back.

“Command personnel represent the Federation. They need judgment, confidence and leadership instinct. Not everyone can learn those.”

Mattix looked through the viewport.

“No,” he said. “But many people can imitate them.”

Solan’s smile disappeared.

The shuttle entered the academy cruiser’s approach lane.

Warning lamps blinked inside the cabin. The deck vibrated as maneuvering thrusters fired.

Mattix watched the walls of Horizon Three rise around them. The cruiser’s hull was scarred from decades of service. Maintenance crews moved along illuminated platforms. Training Vipers rested inside launch compartments, their white hulls marked by red stripes and academy symbols.

For the first time, Mattix felt something stronger than anxiety.

He felt anger.

He had earned the right to stand before the council.

Whether they admitted him or not, he would not allow them to treat his presence as a clerical inconvenience.

The shuttle settled into the docking cradle.

The hatch opened.

Cold, filtered air entered the cabin.

Mattix followed the uniformed passengers into the academy.

The Council of Seven met in a chamber designed to make candidates feel small.

The room was circular, with tiered seats rising along the far wall. Seven council members sat behind a curved black desk beneath the Federation seal. A single chair faced them from the center of the floor.

Mattix remained standing beside it.

He had been waiting for nearly half a centar.

No one apologized.

Councilor Ilyan Voss sat in the central position. He was the academy’s commandant, a severe man with silver at his temples and the kind of stillness that made every movement seem intentional. To his right sat three officers from navigation, tactical command and fleet administration. To his left sat representatives from engineering, colonial security and academy education.

An eighth person sat apart from the council.

Professor Cassian Vale wore a dark academic coat rather than a military uniform. His hair was iron-gray, his face deeply lined, and his attention seemed fixed on the data display before him. He had not looked directly at Mattix since the hearing began.

Voss folded his hands.

“Candidate Raydeon, this council has reviewed your fifth petition.”

“Yes, Commandant.”

“You have passed all standard entrance examinations.”

“Yes.”

“Your technical scores are exceptional.”

“Thank you.”

“That was not praise. It was a statement of record.”

Mattix held his expression still.

“Yes, Commandant.”

Councilor Serin Dhal, head of academy education, activated a display.

Mattix’s scores appeared above the desk.

Mathematics: ninety-seven.

Navigation theory: ninety-nine.

Mechanical systems: ninety-six.

Federation history: ninety-two.

Tactical simulation: ninety-four.

Stress response: eighty-eight.

Leadership evaluation: sixty-one.

Command presence: fifty-eight.

Dhal looked at him.

“You continue to perform poorly in subjective command assessment.”

“I continue to perform differently than the assessors expect.”

A council member from colonial security leaned forward.

“Are you suggesting the assessments are defective?”

“I’m suggesting they may reward familiarity.”

“Explain.”

“Candidates raised in fleet families understand the language of command evaluations. They know when to interrupt, when to project certainty, when to challenge an instructor and when to appear cooperative. Those behaviors are treated as evidence of leadership.”

“And you do not possess those behaviors?”

“I can perform them.”

“Yet you choose not to?”

“I do not believe performance and judgment are the same thing.”

A silence followed.

Mattix had rehearsed less dangerous answers.

He had intended to sound respectful, determined and restrained.

But this was his fifth hearing.

Councilor Dhal studied him.

“Your previous evaluators described you as hesitant.”

“I take time before making decisions.”

“In combat, hesitation kills.”

“So does speed without understanding.”

The tactical representative, Commander Braska, looked up sharply.

“You believe you understand combat?”

“No, Commander.”

“Then take care when offering conclusions about it.”

“I understand that rapid decisions are valuable only when they are correct.”

“An obvious statement.”

“Then it should not be controversial.”

Braska’s jaw tightened.

Commandant Voss raised one hand.

“Candidate Raydeon, why do you wish to enter the command program?”

Mattix had answered this question many times.

He had used phrases about service, duty and protecting the fleet.

They had always sounded borrowed.

He looked toward the academy seal above the council.

“Because the fleet is changing.”

Voss waited.

Mattix continued.

“We are not defending established colonies. We are escorting nearly half a million civilians through unknown space for ten yahrens. Every ship is being asked to perform functions it was not built for. Civilian captains are operating under military formation rules. Military vessels are becoming supply depots, hospitals and construction escorts.”

The fleet administrator frowned.

“This council understands the expedition.”

“I know.”

“Then what is your point?”

“The command program still selects candidates as though the only future officers it needs are the same kind it trained before departure.”

Braska spoke quietly.

“And you believe you are a new kind?”

“No.”

Mattix paused.

“I believe I may see things differently because I was raised aboard the ships officers are assigned to protect.”

The colonial security representative tapped a finger against the desk.

“Many candidates come from civilian backgrounds.”

“Most admitted candidates come from senior families, planetary academies or commissioned households.”

“Do you resent them?”

“No.”

“Your record suggests otherwise.”

“My record suggests I disagree with them.”

“Frequently.”

“When necessary.”

Councilor Dhal changed the display.

A tactical simulation appeared.

Mattix recognized it immediately.

It had been part of his third examination: a convoy defense exercise involving twelve civilian transports, three escort ships and an attacking force of unknown strength.

Dhal enlarged the command log.

“You disobeyed the simulated task-force commander.”

“I challenged the deployment.”

“You redirected two civilian transports without authorization.”

“The assigned formation placed them inside the attack corridor.”

“You did not possess confirmed enemy vectors.”

“The patrol craft were reacting to something outside sensor range.”

“Speculation.”

“Their formation changed before the attack warning.”

Braska examined the display.

“You inferred an enemy vector from the patrol response.”

“Yes.”

“The simulation report states you were correct.”

“Yes.”

“Yet your evaluator marked you down for command discipline.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because I redirected the transports before receiving permission.”

“Would you do it again?”

Mattix looked directly at him.

“Yes.”

Braska leaned back.

The commandant’s expression did not change.

Professor Vale remained focused on his own display.

Voss said, “Your confidence appears greater here than in your assessments.”

“The assessments asked me to demonstrate authority over people I had just met.”

“Command often requires that.”

“Yes, but authority without trust is only rank.”

The engineering representative gave a quiet, humorless laugh.

“Candidate, are you attempting to persuade this council or lecture it?”

“I’m attempting to answer honestly.”

“That approach has not served you well.”

“No,” Mattix said. “But the other approach has not admitted me either.”

Several council members shifted in their seats.

Voss deactivated the tactical display.

“Your persistence is noted. It is not, by itself, a qualification.”

“I understand.”

“You have no service record.”

“No.”

“No family association with the fleet.”

“No.”

“No political sponsor.”

“No.”

“No formal command experience.”

“No.”

“Your physical scores are acceptable but unremarkable.”

“Yes.”

“Your psychological report identifies social reserve, resistance to institutional pressure and an elevated tendency to question superior decisions.”

“Yes.”

Voss’s gaze hardened.

“Why should this academy spend resources on you?”

Mattix had known the question would come.

He had prepared an answer.

He abandoned it.

“Because I passed.”

“That is insufficient.”

“Then the tests are dishonest.”

The chamber became very still.

Voss did not raise his voice.

“Explain that statement carefully.”

Mattix felt his pulse in his throat.

“If the academy says passing the examinations qualifies a candidate for consideration, but candidates can be rejected because they do not resemble those already admitted, then the examinations are not measuring qualification. They are measuring whether outsiders can imitate insiders.”

Councilor Dhal’s expression cooled.

“This institution has trained generations of fleet officers.”

“That does not mean every method is right.”

“You presume a great deal.”

“I have been tested five times. I no longer need to presume how the process treats me.”

Commander Braska turned toward Voss.

“I have no further questions.”

The colonial security representative agreed.

“Nor do I.”

One by one, the council members entered recommendations into their consoles.

Mattix watched the indicators appear on Voss’s screen.

He could not read the votes, but he understood their faces.

This was ending exactly as it had before.

Voss looked at the assembled council.

“The candidate has completed his statement. We will proceed to final review.”

Mattix remained standing.

“Am I dismissed?”

“Not yet.”

The councilors spoke quietly among themselves. Their voices did not carry across the chamber.

Mattix looked toward Professor Vale.

The older man had not participated in the questioning.

He was studying the convoy simulation.

Not Mattix’s answers.

Not the evaluator comments.

The simulation itself.

Vale moved backward through the recorded sequence, frame by frame. He isolated patrol movements, civilian-engine output and communications delays. Then he opened a second simulation.

Mattix recognized that one too.

A navigation emergency from his fourth examination.

Vale opened a third.

Then a fourth.

All were exercises in which Mattix had received high technical scores but poor command evaluations.

For the first time, the professor looked up.

His eyes met Mattix’s.

There was no approval in them.

Only concentration.

Voss touched his console.

“The council has reached a preliminary determination.”

Mattix forced himself to remain still.

“Candidate Raydeon, while your academic qualifications meet admission requirements, the majority concludes that your command profile remains incompatible with academy standards.”

The words were familiar.

They landed no more gently for that.

“Your petition is therefore—”

“I object.”

Professor Vale’s voice was quiet.

It stopped the commandant mid-sentence.

Every council member turned toward him.

Vale rose from his seat.

Voss stared at him.

“You are present as an advisory observer, Professor.”

“I am aware of my status.”

“You have not participated in the candidate review.”

“I have now reviewed it.”

Councilor Dhal folded her hands.

“On what grounds do you object?”

Vale did not answer immediately.

He walked toward the center of the chamber and stopped beside Mattix’s chair.

Up close, he appeared older than Mattix had first thought. A pale scar ran from beneath his left ear into the collar of his coat.

Vale looked toward the tactical display.

“Candidate Raydeon, during convoy simulation seventeen, why did you redirect Transport Six before the patrol leader issued a threat alert?”

Mattix answered carefully.

“The patrol formation compressed on its outer edge.”

“That is in the report.”

“The lead fighter also reduced thrust for less than two microns.”

“That reduction was within normal variation.”

“Not while the second patrol element accelerated.”

Vale’s eyes narrowed.

“What did that tell you?”

“The lead pilot had seen something and was trying not to reveal the reaction through open telemetry.”

Commander Braska leaned toward his console.

“That behavior was not programmed as a direct signal.”

“No,” Mattix said.

Vale brought up the navigation emergency.

“In this exercise, you ordered an engine shutdown on a supply vessel despite receiving a green reactor status.”

“The ship’s course corrections were becoming too precise.”

Councilor Dhal frowned. “Too precise?”

“The computer was compensating for an unstable drive chamber. Each correction reduced the visible deviation, but the frequency of corrections increased.”

Vale changed the display again.

A combat formation appeared.

“You moved your command ship away from the strongest defensive position.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“The attacking force kept avoiding it.”

“You believed the enemy knew the formation?”

“I believed they wanted us to remain there.”

Vale glanced at the council.

The room had changed.

Mattix did not understand why.

Voss did.

“What are you suggesting, Professor?”

Vale returned to his seat but did not sit.

“I am suggesting that this candidate’s evaluations have been interpreted incorrectly.”

The colonial security representative looked irritated.

“His scores are clear.”

“His scores are irrelevant.”

That produced a sharper silence than Mattix’s earlier challenge.

Vale touched the display.

A pattern of lines appeared across all four simulations.

Mattix saw movement vectors, timing intervals and threat-response overlays.

He did not immediately understand what the professor had done.

Vale addressed the council.

“In each of these exercises, Candidate Raydeon identified critical changes before the simulation provided enough data for standard analytical confirmation.”

Braska studied the overlays.

“Intuition?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Vale looked at Mattix again.

“That is the question.”

Councilor Dhal shook her head.

“We cannot admit a candidate because he guessed correctly.”

“He did not guess.”

“How can you know?”

“Because his responses are consistent.”

Vale expanded the timing records.

“He does not predict events in the dramatic sense. He notices relationships between movements that other candidates treat as unrelated. Engine corrections. Patrol spacing. Communications delay. Civilian traffic behavior. He is reading the whole operational field rather than isolated command data.”

Mattix listened without moving.

Something inside him felt exposed.

Voss examined the records.

“Pattern synthesis.”

“Possibly.”

“Spatial command awareness?”

“Perhaps.”

“You sound uncertain.”

“I am.”

Vale finally sat.

“That is why he should be admitted.”

Several council members spoke at once.

Voss raised his hand.

Dhal was the first to continue.

“The academy is not a laboratory for Professor Vale’s theories.”

“No,” Vale said. “It is an institution responsible for identifying useful officers.”

“The candidate’s leadership evaluations remain poor.”

“Because the evaluations reward projected confidence and conventional command behavior.”

Mattix almost looked at his grandfather, though Joren was far away aboard the Zacayrya.

Make them answer the right question.

Commander Braska studied Mattix.

“Candidate, were you aware that you were doing this?”

Mattix looked at the overlapping diagrams.

“I was aware that something was wrong.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“No, Commander. I did not think of it as a skill.”

Vale spoke before Braska could respond.

“Good.”

Mattix turned toward him.

The professor’s expression revealed nothing.

Voss noticed the exchange.

“You have encountered this before, Professor.”

Vale’s face became still.

“I have encountered evidence of it.”

“In whom?”

“That is not relevant to this hearing.”

“It is relevant if you are asking us to overturn academy standards.”

“I am asking you to apply them intelligently.”

The engineering representative looked at Vale.

“What exactly do you propose?”

“Conditional admission.”

Dhal gave a small shake of her head.

“To the command program?”

“Yes.”

“On your sponsorship?”

Vale paused.

“Yes.”

That caused more surprise than his objection.

Mattix understood enough to know why.

Academy sponsorship made the sponsor responsible for the candidate’s progress. Professors did not extend it casually. Senior instructors sometimes sponsored officers from prominent fleet families, but rarely to unknown civilians.

Voss leaned back.

“You have not sponsored a command candidate in eleven yahrens.”

“I am aware.”

“The last candidate withdrew.”

“I am aware.”

“You refused three council requests since then.”

“I remember my own decisions, Commandant.”

Voss looked toward Mattix.

“What do you see in him?”

Vale’s answer came without hesitation.

“I will not say.”

The council members stared at him.

Even Mattix turned fully toward the professor.

Voss’s voice became colder.

“You ask us to admit a repeatedly rejected candidate, yet you refuse to identify the qualification on which your objection is based.”

“If I name it, he will attempt to perform it.”

Mattix said nothing.

Vale continued.

“I want to know whether academy training strengthens the ability or destroys it. I want to know whether he learns to recognize it without being told what to seek.”

Dhal’s expression hardened.

“The candidate is not an experiment.”

“No,” Vale said. “He is a candidate you were about to reject because your measurements did not recognize what he was doing.”

The commandant looked from Vale to the simulation records.

For several moments, no one spoke.

Beyond the walls of the chamber, Horizon Three’s engines produced a low, constant vibration.

The cruiser was moving with the fleet.

All of them were moving.

Toward a world none of them had seen.

Voss addressed Mattix.

“Candidate Raydeon, conditional admission would place you under enhanced review. Your academic performance, conduct and command evaluations would be examined after every training cycle. Professor Vale would serve as your principal sponsor and would possess authority to recommend your immediate dismissal.”

“I understand.”

“You would enter behind candidates who have already completed preliminary military instruction.”

“I understand.”

“You would receive no adjustment for your civilian education.”

“I understand.”

“Many cadets will consider your admission undeserved.”

Mattix looked toward the council.

“They already do.”

Commander Braska’s mouth moved slightly. It might have been the beginning of a smile.

Voss turned toward the council members.

“I will reopen the vote.”

The seven indicators disappeared from his console.

One by one, they returned.

The first glowed red.

Reject.

The second glowed red.

The third turned white.

Admit.

The fourth remained dark for several seconds before glowing white.

The fifth turned red.

Three votes against.

Two in favor.

The sixth appeared.

White.

Mattix stopped breathing.

The final vote belonged to Commandant Voss.

He studied Mattix for a long time.

Then he entered his decision.

The seventh indicator turned white.

Four to three.

Voss shut down the display.

“Mattix Raydeon, by majority decision of the Council of Seven, you are granted conditional admission to the Horizon Military Academy command program.”

Mattix heard the words.

For one strange moment, they did not connect to meaning.

Voss continued.

“You will report to Cadet Processing at the beginning of first watch tomorrow. Quarters assignment, uniform issue and training schedules will be provided upon registration.”

Mattix found his voice.

“Yes, Commandant.”

“You will address all officers according to academy protocol.”

“Yes, Commandant.”

“You will obey lawful orders.”

“Yes, Commandant.”

“You will learn the difference between honest disagreement and self-indulgent defiance.”

Mattix hesitated.

“Yes, Commandant.”

Voss looked toward Vale.

“Professor, he is your responsibility.”

Vale inclined his head.

The commandant dismissed the council.

Mattix remained beside the chair as the members gathered their files. Some avoided looking at him. Commander Braska gave him a brief nod before leaving. Councilor Dhal passed without acknowledgment.

Within a few moments, only Professor Vale remained.

Mattix turned toward him.

“Professor.”

Vale continued arranging data on his console.

“Do not thank me.”

“I was going to ask why you did it.”

“I explained my objection.”

“You said you saw something in the simulations.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Vale shut down the display.

“You heard what I told the council.”

“You refused to tell them.”

“I also refuse to tell you.”

Mattix stared at him.

“You argued for my admission without explaining why, and now you expect me not to ask?”

“I expect you to ask. I do not expect to answer.”

“Then what am I supposed to do?”

“Attend the academy.”

“That is all?”

“For tomorrow, that will be difficult enough.”

Vale walked toward the chamber exit.

Mattix followed.

“Professor.”

Vale stopped at the doorway.

“Why the command program? If this is some kind of pattern recognition, wouldn’t navigation or tactical analysis make more sense?”

The professor looked back.

“Perhaps.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“No.”

“You do that often.”

“You will discover that most useful questions survive their first answer.”

Vale stepped into the corridor.

Mattix followed him once more.

“What happens if I never discover what you saw?”

The professor turned.

For the first time, there was something almost human in his expression. Not warmth. Not exactly.

Concern.

“Then I was wrong.”

“And I lose my place here.”

“Yes.”

“You make that sound simple.”

“It will not be simple for either of us.”

Vale walked away.

Mattix remained in the corridor.

Cadets moved past him in gray uniforms. Officers crossed between lecture halls. A flight-training announcement echoed from overhead speakers.

Through a narrow observation panel at the end of the passage, he could see part of the fleet.

The Zacayrya was somewhere among those lights.

His family did not know yet.

His mother would cry. His father would be proud and afraid in equal measure. Selra would claim the council had finally developed intelligence. Corin would pretend never to have doubted him.

His grandfather would probably nod once and ask when training began.

Mattix walked to the observation panel.

Beyond the academy cruiser, Viper squadrons moved toward the distant outline of the Battlestar Vermilion. The fighters formed, separated and re-formed as they approached the warship’s flight corridors.

Farther out, civilian ships maintained their long migration formation.

Mattix watched them.

At first, he saw only traffic.

Then something pulled at his attention.

A fuel carrier near the lower edge of the fleet had adjusted course by less than half a degree. A patrol cutter above it altered speed. A group of supply drones shifted outward from their programmed lane.

None of the movements was unusual by itself.

Together, they formed the beginning of a distortion.

Mattix leaned closer to the glass.

He followed the motion across the fleet.

The change was spreading.

Not an emergency.

Not yet.

Perhaps only a formation correction traveling from ship to ship.

But the patrol cutter changed course again.

Mattix felt the same sensation he had experienced during the academy simulations: a pressure behind his eyes, as though a shape existed just outside his direct vision.

He looked toward the distant battlestar.

Several Vipers broke formation.

A moment later, the academy cruiser’s alert system chimed.

“Attention all departments. Minor navigational adjustment in fleet sector seven. Training operations remain active. Stand by for updated formation instructions.”

Cadets continued walking.

No one seemed concerned.

Mattix remained at the window.

The official notice had come eighteen microns after he first noticed the shift.

He did not know whether that mattered.

He did not know what Professor Vale believed he had seen.

He knew only that for the first time in five attempts, the academy had opened its doors.

And somewhere within the enormous migrating fleet, ships were already moving in patterns he could not yet name.

Behind them lay the known colonies.

Ahead lay ten yahrens of darkness, an unclaimed world and every danger the charts had failed to imagine.

Mattix Raydeon placed one hand against the observation glass.

The fleet turned slowly toward the stars.

This time, he would be going with it.
